I'm an Associate Professor of English at Emory University. My personal home page archives my teaching, research, and educational background (BA, Yale, PhD, CUNY) My interests include digital pedagogy, writing studies, and participatory culture. My current research surveys the relationship between schooling and participatory culture. The study ranges from the Jacksonian era to the present, where participation is often electronically mediated.
I am best known as the author of How the University Works: Higher Education and the Low-Wage Nation [PDF] (NYU Press,2008) and as a frequent contributor to The Chronicle of Higher Education. I am co-editor of The Politics of Information: The Electronic Mediation of Social Change (Alt-X, 2004), and coeditor of Tenured Bosses and Disposable Teachers (SIUP, 2004). I founded Workplace: A Journal of Academic Labor and serve on the editorial board of several journals, such as as AAUP's Academe.
